Frequently Asked Questions

Why Use An Executive Coach?

  • A good executive coach acts as a thinking partner, an objective outsider who asks good questions, listens intently, challenges forcefully and advises selectively.
  • This process results in more feedback, more perspective and more options.

Why Work With Tom Curren?

  • He specializes in coaching CEOs, General Managers and successful entrepreneurs with demanding schedules and big agendas.
  • He has deep expertise in aligning top teams around the big changes that aggressive leaders want to make.
  • He draws upon senior level experience and a strong track record as a business strategist. Tom has worked "at the top" for 25 years, including Procter and Gamble, McKinsey and Marriott Corporation.
  • Tom maintains a discrete, low-profile approach through telephone, e-mail and fax contact, supplemented by on-site work when needed.

What Are Some Typical Coaching Tasks?

  • Help define and focus on long-term strategy.
Some new managers are more comfortable with their operational ability than their strategic thinking skills. Tom uses his strategic experience to help managers identify the specific business issues that will make or break their strategy.

  • Help get higher performance from the top team.
Getting greater alignment and performance from the team is an ongoing need for most leaders. Tom draws upon his consulting practice in top team alignment to help diagnose problems and suggest ideas that have helped in similar situations.

  • Help solve immediate, sensitive personnel problems.
Most executives find it valuable to get advice and perspective on sensitive issues from a confidential outside relationship that has no other ties to the business and is willing to ask the tough questions.

  • Accelerate "growing into the job" through a cycle of weekly action learning.
A weekly coaching call can double the rate of personal development by providing a structure to define new behaviors and test them in the workplace.

  • Think through a range of personal career options and strategies.
A coach provides the executive with a confidential sounding board on a range of career options

How Is Coaching Different From...?

  • Coaching is more than consulting.
Like consultants, coaches also share information and give advice. Coaches also make requests, versus just giving recommendations. Coaching pays attention to both the person and the results.

  • Coaching is different than talking with a friend or peer.
Friends don't generally have the perspective or advanced training to develop others. Peers have a vested interest in the political status quo; they are unlikely to insist on results.

  • Coaching can be intensely personal, yet it is not therapy.
Coaching is about achievement; therapy is about healing. Coaching is about momentum; therapy is about recovery. Coaching is about results; therapy is about progress. Therapy moves a person from dysfunctional to functional. Coaching moves an executive from functional to extraordinary.

How Does Coaching Work?

Tom's program is built around 60-minute telephone calls scheduled weekly (3-4 per month, depending on schedules) to work on the business and personal issues that are most pressing for the executive. This program can stand alone or in conjunction with on-site consulting work at a standard per diem rate.

Each week, executives bring an agenda to the session, comprised of topics they want to talk through, action learning results from the prior week, insights they want to share, etc.

As a professional coach, Tom listens carefully, draws parallels and distinctions, shares principles, asks and answers questions, mirrors back what he hears/feels, gives advice, and makes requests. He also holds the client to meeting expectations and goals established in the previous session, i.e. "staff work" they decided they wanted to take on.

Clients may be sent follow-up material relevant to a particular issue (for example, articles on CEO transitions). If needed, this can include strategic thinking tools and change planning material customized to each manager's business issues. Frequently, Tom also acts as a gateway to other experts relevant to client needs.

Clients are free to call anytime between sessions. Tom does not bill for extra time, but unscheduled calls are typically 5-10 minutes.

How Much Does This Cost?

The cost of a 90-day coaching program is $6,000. Clients may cancel at any time. They may renew on a monthly basis at $2,000 per month.

Off-site consulting, such as reviewing and editing materials or preparing written recommendations, is $250 per hour.

Tom's fees for on-site consulting are $4,500 per day plus expenses.
